McKinney, Texas

McKinney, Texas, is a suburb of Dallas that is nestled in rolling hills about 30 miles north of the big city. This suburb has more of a small town atmosphere than many of the other Dallas suburban neighborhoods, possibly because of the historic buildings and park-like atmosphere. When you drive into McKinney, it doesn’t seem like a community with over 100,000 people. And yet it is one of the DFW areas fastest-growing suburbs.

The McKinney Community

The town’s downtown area has a small town Main Street feel to it, with boutiques, restaurants, cafes, and more housed in historic buildings along quaint streets. In fact, the courthouse at the center of the square is an original building, and was turned into a performing arts center in 2006 after a period of refurbishing.

McKinney is served by the McKinney Independent School District and Frisco Independent School District. Both these systems are proud to be distinguished members of the Dallas area public schools, known for their excellence.

Nearby is the rapidly growing Colin County Regional Airport, fast becoming a hub for corporate air travel. There are several business tenants at the airport as well,

some of them major employers, like EDS, Texas Instruments, United American Insurance, and many more.

McKinney Real Estate

This suburb has some of the most affluent members of Flower Mound, and most are well-educated and have high-paying jobs. The estimated average income of McKinney households is a whopping $94,000. Many of the residents have highly responsible positions at companies like Raytheon, The McKinney Medical Center, Orthofix, and other major employers. Most homes in McKinney range between $500,000 and $1 million plus, but you can find properties as high as $4 - $5 million.

McKinney Entertainment

There are some interesting things to do in this historic town, aside from the usual recreation center and nature walks. One of those things is Chestnut Village Historic Square, where you can see seven of McKinney’s historic homes and buildings. These buildings were built beginning in the 1850s, and the project is run by the Heritage Guild of Collin County. You can take tours, visit the chapel, or book your own event.

One of the residents’ favorites is the Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary, which is a preservation and education center. There are 289 acres of sanctuary, with hiking trails and gardens. You can see live animals on your tour as well as indoor and outdoor exhibits.

Also remember that you are within an hour’s drive of the Dallas metroplex, with all its culture, arts, events, and festivals, not to mention major professional sports.

McKinney Recreation

McKinney is peppered with amenities, including the Towne Lake Recreation Area, Al Ruschhaupt Soccer Complex, McKinney Community Center and Nature Trail, pools, parks, playgrounds, and much more.
