There is always something fun to do in Plano TX! Whether it is a free concert in the park, dance lessons for seniors, or a family hike night, the City of Plano offers a myriad of special events for its citizens to enjoy. The Plano Senior Recreation Center also offers several special events, classes, and social opportunities for the senior citizens of the city. Newcomer Friends of Greater Plano offers many special events throughout the year for those new to the area – these events are a great way to meet your neighbors and learn more about our exciting city!
One Plano TX event that draws more than 70,000 visitors annually is the Plano Balloon Festival. During this celebration at Oak Point Park, attendees enjoy the awe-inspiring and colorful hot-air balloons that float gracefully through the sky. Families can take a balloon ride, listen to great music, or just enjoy the plethora of food and great company!
Plano’s annual Juneteenth celebration, hosted by the City of Plano Douglass Community Center, honors the day that slavery was ended in Texas and includes a fun day of community service, games, live music, a carnival atmosphere, and lots of great food.
On the second Saturday of each month (through November), all of North Texas is invited to come experience the fun Downtown Plano has to offer at the Downtown @ Sundown series. The Downtown @ Sundown evenings include live music, an Art Walk, a vendor marketplace with gourmet foods and locally handcrafted items, and many shops and restaurants that will be open late to accommodate visitors. Families can spread out a blanket and enjoy a hit movie under the stars of the Oak Point Park Ampitheater during the Movies In The Park series in the fall.
Plano even offers special events for the “furry” members of your family! The annual K-9 Kerplunk is an opportunity for the dogs of Plano to enjoy a day of swimming in a real pool. Dogs and their owners can also spend the day enjoying the Dog Park at Jack Carter Park.
The Plano Department of Parks & Recreation offers a number of programs for youth, adults, and seniors alike. The youth and adult sports leagues have teams for soccer, football, softball, swimming, and more. Leisure courses are also offered through the Recreation Department, and there is truly something for everyone! The department includes several recreation centers, pools, and ballparks.
Plano has an extremely active arts community, with organizations for music, theater, dance, visual arts, and more. The city’s Creative Arts Division is devoted to creating an environment where the community can share in the full diversity and vitality of the arts. Plano’s Stages oversees The Courtyard Theater, Cox Building Playhouse and The Amphitheater At Oak Point Park – all of these venues offer high-quality performing arts events year-round, from national touring musical acts to outstanding community theater productions. At any given time there are several cultural arts activities to be enjoyed in Plano – just check the calendar!
The many parks in Plano feature several playgrounds, hiking and biking trails, and a nature preserve. Plano’s bike trails take advantage of several contiguous parks to extend their range. Bob Woodruff Park, which has its north-west corner at Spring Creek Pkwy & Parker Rd and extends south of Park & east to Los Rios Blvd, features one of the largest playgrounds in Plano. Oak Point Park is Plano's largest park, in area. The Arbor Hills Nature Preserve is located west of the Dallas North Tollway on Parker Rd. It features a shared pedestrian and bicycling trail which highlights the assets of the preserve, and the woods within the preserve are traversed by several unpaved trails.
Of course, whether you are visiting Plano or are a resident, you can’t miss the gorgeous and famous wildflowers from spring through summer. While many of the most popular blooms are available in spring such as the Bluebonnet, many other varieties bloom throughout the year.
